For many Hong Kong golfers, the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course is where the game becomes real. It is the only public golf course in Hong Kong, and for anyone without a private club membership, it is where you are most likely to play your first full round.
Here is what beginners should know before heading over.
Getting There
Kau Sai Chau is an island off Sai Kung. You take a short ferry from Sai Kung pier, and the journey is part of the experience. Allow plenty of time to get to Sai Kung, particularly on weekends, and check the ferry schedule before you travel.
How Booking Works
You cannot simply turn up and play. Before your first round, you need to register with the course and provide proof of handicap. Registration takes a few days to process, so do it well before you want to play.
Once registered, you can book tee times. Weekdays are much easier to get than weekends, when demand is extremely high. Check the course's official website for current booking rules and green fees.
Which Course Should You Play?
There are three 18-hole courses:
- South Course - par 69 and the shortest of the three, which makes it a sensible choice for newer golfers
- North Course - par 72, a Gary Player design
- East Course - par 72, with dramatic coastal holes that can be very exposed to the wind
Note that some courses use carts and some are walking courses, and cart use may require a valid driving licence. Check before you book.
What to Expect on the Course
Kau Sai Chau is hilly, exposed and often windy. Expect uneven lies, elevation changes and holes where the wind makes a club or two of difference. It is beautiful golf, but it is not an easy introduction.
It is also very busy. Pace of play matters, so be ready to hit when it is your turn, keep a spare ball in your pocket and pick up if a hole is getting away from you.
How to Prepare
You do not need to be a great golfer to enjoy Kau Sai Chau, but a few skills make a big difference:
- Consistent contact. Being able to get the ball airborne and moving forward with most clubs
- A reliable club off the tee. It does not have to be a driver. A hybrid you trust is better than a driver you fear
- Basic short game. Simple chips and putts save a huge number of shots
- Uneven lies. Understanding how to adjust your setup when the ball is above or below your feet
