The slice is the most common problem we see at GOLFTEC Hong Kong. The ball starts left, curves hard to the right and finishes in the trees, the rough or out of bounds. On tight Hong Kong courses, a slice can cost several balls and a lot of shots in a single round.
The good news is that a slice is very fixable once you understand what is actually causing it.
What Causes a Slice
A slice (for a right-handed golfer) is caused by the relationship between two things at impact:
- Club path - the direction the club is travelling
- Clubface angle - the direction the face is pointing
When the face is open relative to the path, the ball curves right. The more open, the bigger the curve. Most slicers combine an out-to-in path with a face that is open to that path. The ball starts left of target and then curves back to the right.
Why Most Slice Fixes Fail
The typical reaction to a slice is to aim further left. That makes it worse. Aiming left encourages an even more out-to-in path, which creates even more slice spin.
Other common fixes, like trying to "swing inside out" without addressing the clubface, can turn a slice into a push or a hook. The key is to understand which part of your face-to-path relationship needs fixing first.
Fix the Face First
For most slicers, the clubface is the first priority. Common fixes include:
- A stronger grip. Rotating both hands slightly clockwise on the grip makes it easier to square the face through impact.
- Better wrist conditions at the top. A cupped lead wrist at the top of the backswing tends to open the face.
- Allowing the forearms to rotate. Many slicers hold the face open through impact.
Then Work on the Path
Once the face is more under control, you can work on the path. Focus on starting the downswing with the lower body rather than the shoulders, which stops the club being thrown over the top.
Check Your Setup and Equipment
An open stance, the ball too far forward, or shoulders aligned left of target can all encourage an out-to-in path. Equipment matters too. A driver with too little loft or the wrong shaft makes squaring the face harder. A club fitting can make a surprising difference.
Measure It, Do Not Guess
The fastest way to fix a slice is to know your numbers. At GOLFTEC Hong Kong, we measure your club path and face angle on every swing, so you can see whether a change is working immediately rather than waiting to find out on the course.
