For many new golfers, the rules of golf are less intimidating than the etiquette. Nobody wants to be the person holding up the group behind or unknowingly breaking an unwritten rule. The good news is that golf etiquette is mostly common sense, and once you know the basics, it quickly becomes second nature.
Pace of Play
Hong Kong courses are busy, so pace of play matters more here than almost anywhere. A few simple habits help:
- Be ready to hit when it is your turn. Choose your club and line while others are playing.
- Play "ready golf" in casual rounds. Whoever is ready hits first, as long as it is safe.
- Limit practice swings. One or two is plenty.
- Know when to pick up. If a hole is getting away from you, pick up the ball and move on.
- Keep up with the group in front, not just ahead of the group behind.
Safety First
- Never swing when someone is close to you
- Wait until the group ahead is out of range before hitting
- Shout "fore" loudly if your ball is heading towards anyone
Take Care of the Course
- Repair pitch marks on the green
- Replace or fill divots on the fairway
- Rake bunkers after playing out
- Follow cart rules, especially after rain
On the Green
- Do not walk on another player's putting line
- Stand still and stay quiet while others putt
- Mark your ball when asked
- The player closest to the hole usually takes care of the flag
Dress Code
Hong Kong clubs tend to take dress codes seriously. Collared shirts, tailored shorts or trousers and golf shoes are the norm. Check each club's rules before you play.
Be a Good Playing Partner
Be on time, turn your phone to silent and be encouraging. Everybody hits bad shots, and nobody minds a beginner who is friendly, safe and keeps up the pace.
The Best Etiquette Is Being Prepared
The easiest way to keep up the pace and enjoy the round is to arrive with a reliable swing. At GOLFTEC Hong Kong, our coaches help beginners build a consistent swing and understand how to manage themselves on the course. See our plans and pricing.
