Finding somewhere to practise golf in Hong Kong is harder than it should be. Outdoor driving ranges are few and far between, many are a long journey from the city centre and several well-known ranges have closed over the years. That has pushed more and more golfers indoors.
Here is how the main practice options in Hong Kong compare, and how to choose the right one for your game.
Outdoor Driving Ranges
Hong Kong's outdoor ranges include the range at Kau Sai Chau, the Tuen Mun Golf Centre and ranges at private clubs for members. Before you go, check opening hours and access, as these change.
The good: You see the full flight of the ball, which is satisfying and useful for understanding shape and trajectory.
The challenges: Travel time, queues at peak times and exposure to the weather. Summer heat, typhoon season and heavy rain regularly wipe out practice sessions. Most ranges also give you very little information beyond where the ball lands.
Indoor Golf Studios and Simulators
Indoor golf in Hong Kong has grown quickly, from simulator bars to dedicated training studios. Quality varies a lot, so it is worth understanding the difference.
- Entertainment simulators are great for playing virtual rounds with friends but are not always accurate enough for serious practice.
- Training studios use tour-level launch monitors and are built for improvement rather than entertainment.
The biggest advantage indoors is data. A good launch monitor tells you club speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin and where the ball would have finished. You stop guessing and start learning.
Which Is Better for Improving?
For most Hong Kong golfers, the answer is a mix, with indoor sessions doing most of the work. Here is why:
- Consistency. You can practise year-round, whatever the weather.
- Feedback. You know whether a change is working after one shot, not after a bucket of balls.
- Convenience. A central location means you can train before or after work.
- Efficiency. Forty focused minutes with data beats two hours of hitting balls without a plan.
Practise With a Purpose
Wherever you practise, the quality of your practice matters more than the quantity. Every session should have one clear focus, a way to measure it and a plan for taking it to the course.
At GOLFTEC Hong Kong in Admiralty, our golf simulator bays combine launch monitor data and video analysis, and our practice memberships let you build on what you learn in lessons. See the options on our plans and pricing page.
